Dave Martell

martellMartell has been playing trombone professionally in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 35 years. He has performed with Earl Hines, Cab Calloway, Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, Lou Rawls, Burt Bacharach, Pete Escovedo, and Jimmy Heath, along with pop artists Bobby Caldwell, The Temptations, the Four Tops, and Seal.

He has recorded with the Asian American Orchestra, Dave Eshelman’s Jazz Garden Big Band, Ray Brown’s Great Big Band, the Black Market Jazz Orchestra, the Desolation Angels, and Wayne Wallace’s Latin Jazz Ensemble among others. His Latin side also includes being a member of the horn section for salsa artists like Lalo Rodriguez and Eddie Santiago. Recording projects with the Asian American Jazz Orchestra and Wayne Wallace have earned Grammy nominations.

As a theater musician he has performed in the national touring companies of Broadway shows such as ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘The Full Monty’, ‘Hairspray’, and ‘The Producers’.

Originally from Pleasant Hill, CA, Dave received an Associate of Arts degree in Music from Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, CA and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Cal State University at Los Angeles. He also has a teaching degree in music from Cal State University East Bay, and has studied with Roy Main and Dan Livesay. He has been an adjunct staff member with Diablo Valley College and has been on the staff of the Lafayette Summer Music Workshop for twelve years.

Dave has been teaching music in the New Haven Unified School District in Union City, CA for 29 years, where he helped to build the nationally recognized James Logan High School Band. He has also taught middle school, and currently serves as an elementary music specialist. Along with trombone Dave plays Bass Trombone, Bass Trumpet, and Tuba, in addition to composing and arranging music for all ages.
