Mike Williams teaches at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, CA, St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA as well as giving private lessons. He serves as an adjudicator and clinician at various Bay Area high school and college jazz festivals.
Under his instruction, students have won numerous prestigious music awards including the Grammy High School Jazz Band and the Downbeat Magazine’s Jazz Soloist Award. Several students are enjoying careers as prominent touring and recording artists including members of Counting Crows (Universal Records), Michael Buble’s band (Reprise Records), Switchfoot (Columbia Records, Destiny’s Child’s band (Sony Records), Liz Phair‘s band (Capitol Records) Josh Groban’s band (Warner Brothers),) Kenny G‘s band (Arista Records), Hoobastank (Island Records), Aaron Carter’s band (Jive Records), Divit (Nitro Records), Pseudopod (Geffen Records), The Calling (BMG), Mini Pop, 50 Cent (Columbia, Interscope), Britney Spears (Jive Records), The American Idol Band, The Trophy Fire (Greyday Records) and Jem (ATA Records). Currently one of my students is a member of POPLYFE recently seen on “America’s Got Talent,” Sonic Cult.
During the summer, Mike serves as Director for the rock music camp Soundwall Music Camps held on the UCSC campus. For the past nineteen years this innovative residential rock music camp has provided an opportunity for high school age students to study standard fundamental music skills with a rock music emphasis.
Mike earned his Master of Arts from CSU Hayward and performs professionally, both in the United States and internationally, at Jazz Festivals, concerts, clubs and private events.
